Eichmann, Adolf — capture

1960 · Operation · Documented

Israeli agents captured Nazi official Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in May 1960 and secretly transported him to Israel, where he was tried, convicted, and executed.

Official Israeli archival material documents the handover to police and preparations for trial. The operation is celebrated for bringing a principal organizer of the Holocaust before a court, while the violation of Argentine sovereignty generated a separate diplomatic dispute.

Context

Public descriptions often compress intelligence collection, political authorization, logistics and aftermath into one dramatic narrative. The entry separates the event itself from later reconstruction and records the strongest defensible public attribution.

Evidence and interpretation

Tactical accomplishment is only one measure. A complete account also asks whether an action achieved a durable policy goal, violated another state’s sovereignty or changed later security practice.

FILE 03 / QUESTIONS

Before you open the file.

What is the Mossad?

The Mossad is Israel's foreign intelligence agency, responsible for intelligence collection, liaison and covert activity outside Israel. Established in the early years of the state, it works alongside Shin Bet (domestic security) and Aman (military intelligence). This encyclopedia explains its role from the public record, separating established history from popular myth.

Is this an official Mossad publication?

No. This is an independent historical reference work. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or produced by the Mossad or the State of Israel.

What does the Mossad encyclopedia cover?

The 1,250+ page master illustrated edition covers institutional history, directors, people, publicly documented or attributed operations, terminology, controversies, chronology and expanded A–Z reference entries — organized as an 84-topic illustrated research atlas with visual plates, director, country and operations dossiers, and chronology, glossary, maps and source guides.

Which Mossad operations and directors are included?

The edition covers documented, attributed and disputed operations from the public record — including landmark cases such as the 1960 capture of Adolf Eichmann — and profiles the agency's leadership from its 1949 founding through the 2026 transition to its fourteenth director, Roman Gofman. Every operation carries an evidence label: documented, attributed, reported, disputed or unknown.

Does the encyclopedia contain classified information?

No. It is compiled from publicly available books, journalism, historical records, government publications, academic sources and declassified material.

How does the encyclopedia handle disputed claims?

Entries distinguish documented facts, credible attribution, public reporting, disputed claims and matters for which the public evidence remains insufficient.

What format is the digital edition?

The digital edition is a high-resolution, searchable PDF suitable for computers, tablets and most PDF-compatible e-readers.
